The Volkswagen Sharan 2.mini storage0 TDI BlueMotion is a big and economical MPV. By Samuel EeVOLKSWAGEN makes mostly practical cars and none is more practical than the Sharan 2.0 TDI BlueMotion. This is a mid-sized multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), introduced here nearly two years ago with the previous Golf GTI's engine.Getting the hot hatch's 200 hp and 280 Newton-metres of torque directed to its front wheels of course gives this big people-mover rather enthusiastic performance. But now, there is a more economical power plant for this mummy wagon - a two-litre diesel engine. The four-cylinder turbo-diesel churns out 177 hp and a whopping 380 Nm. All this is channelled to the front axle using the same brilliant six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. And since BlueMotion denotes fuel-saving features for the car such as regenerative braking, engine start/stop system and optimised aerodynamics, the Sharan TDI turns in a fuel consumption figure of 5.9 litres per 100 km under the combined cycle, or an impressive 16.9 km per litre. That means, with its 73-litre fuel tank filled to the brim, it is possible to drive the Sharan from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and back, plus one more one-way trip to the Malaysian capital before visiting a service station. And that's taking the scenic route because expressway driving is even more economical. But you don't have to leave Singapore to find out how frugal the Sharan is; drive around town all day and you will barely see the fuel gauge needle move. The only downside to this amazing efficiency is that the diesself storagel-powered Sharan isn't as fun to drive as the petrol-engined version.Turbo lag is obvious when accelerating from standstill. It doesn't help that the Sharan TDI is no lightweight, tipping the scales at 1,800 kg.At 1.72 metres high, the VW MPV is also tall, with a high centre of gravity that manifests itself clearly in body roll whenever you're taking a curve at speed. But at 4.9 metres long and 1.9 metres wide, there is a very spacious cabin with three rows of seats and two electrically operated, rear-sliding doors. The family-friendly MPV's second row can be fitted with one or two integrated child seats to ensure the kids have a more secure ride, with sensors in the doors and windows to prevent them accidentally shutting on little fingers and heads. To get into the pair of third row seats, the Easy Entry system allows the second row seat to be folded by using just one hand. There is some cargo space when the last row is used, but fold it down and the Sharan is as capacious as an estate, if not more so, because of the higher roof. The second row seats can also be folded for a flat and deeper cargo floor. Fuel efficiency isn't the only thing that is available in spades with the Sharan TDI.samuelee@sph.com.sgSPECSVolkswagen Sharan 2.0 TDI BlueMotionEngine 1,968cc inline-4 turbodieselTransmission 6-speed DSG dual clutchMax power 177 hp @ 4,200 rpmMax torque 380 Nm @ 1,750-2,500 rpm0-100 kmh 9.6 secsTop speed 206 kmhCO2 emissions 154 g/kmAverage OMV $43,000Price $208,300 (with COE)Distributor Premium AutomobilesTel 6566-1111迷你倉
