Source: Daily News, Los AngelesNov.文件倉 03--PASADENA -- UCLA should've played its game against Colorado with an anger problem.Instead, the Bruins played with a hangover. That's how UCLA coach Jim Mora described that first half, too.The Bruins had just lost to Stanford and Oregon on the road and should've been on frustration overload. They had Pac-12 doormat Colorado at the Rose Bowl on homecoming. It was the perfect recipe for a rout from the outset, but that so didn't happen. UCLA beat Colorado 45-23, but there wasn't much impressive about it.There was much to be disappointed about in the first half, including those seven penalties."Am I disappointed? No," Mora said. "... If you start being Debbie downer, you're screwed. Disappointed? No. Searching for answers? Yeah."Sure, quarterback Brett Hundley found answers as he threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two other scores. That was nice. But a first-half performance like that against most Pac-12 teams will put UCLA in the kind of hole that won't lead to the Pac-12 title game.UCLA had nearly as many penalty yards (122 yards on 11 penalties) as it did rushing yards (139).Ouch."We didn't have the enthusiasm early," Mora said. "I think that was a little bit of a hangover."Mora tried to beat reporters to the punch by deflecting questions about the debacle of a start and focusing instead on the win.A win is better than a loss, but the way UCLA played in the first half should be concerning. The sluggish Bruins (5-2, 3-2 Pac-12) played so poorly they led just 21-13 at halftime. They actually trailed in the game, too.Colorado (3-5, 0-5) is winless in the Pac-12 and plays so many freshmen you'd think it had scheduled an orientation meeting instead of a football game.Somehow, UCLA made sure the crowd of 80,337 fans needed to stay in its collective seats for the second half. That'll show the Pac-12 North powers that UCLA will be worthy of a rematch if UCLA even makes the Pac-12 Championship game. That is now very much in doubt.UCLA is in a three-way tie with USC (much-improved with Ed Orgeron as interim coach) and Arizona for second-place in the South, trailing Arizona State by one game. That impressive win over Nebraska was so September.UCLA won its first five games and needed to take another step in Mora's progress report by splitting the road games up North. They needed that win over Stanford. They didn't accomplish that and returned with little fire. At least for存倉the first half. The 17th-ranked Bruins got back on track for the second half, but a top-20 team doesn't take off quarters or halves. UCLA won't get to the Pac-12 Championship game with all these miscues, and the Bruins still have the road game against Arizona and home games against Washington and Arizona State if they've got a shot, anyway. And the USC game is at the Coliseum.UCLA still was licking its wounds from the previous two weeks, and it showed. East Coasters looking at the final score might not care so much, but if you watched, you know. The Bruins still can't figure out how to cut down on penalties in the Mora era and had nearly as many (seven) as first downs (eight) in the first half.Unacceptable.UCLA put Colorado away on the first drive of the second half. The Bruins rattled off a 12-play, 70-yard drive in which Brett Hundley scored standing up from 1-yard out.It shouldn't have taken that so long."There was no panic," said fresman receiver Thomas Duarte. "We knew we were better than what we were playing. ... We came out in the second half and played like UCLA should."Colorado's defense was so bad that on many of UCLA's rushing touchdowns, the Bruins walked in untouched with the nearest defender in Santa Anita. That won't happen against Washington or Arizona State or USC. And if UCLA isn't careful and disciplined, its promising season could be down the drain.USC had problems early, and UCLA is encountering debacles late.Midway through the fourth quarter, UCLA star linebacker Antony Barr was flagged for a personal foul penalty against Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau. Before Barr knew it, he was surrounded by five Colorado players and didn't back down.Where was that kind of attitude for UCLA the rest of the game?On the next play, Barr was called for roughing the passer. Two plays, 30 yards in penalties.Sigh.UCLA won, but this was not impressive in any which way.Yes, Hundley got back on track. There is that.Overall, not everyone was on the same bounceback page.UCLA could've pitched a shutout in the second half, but a facemask penalty led to Colorado's 2-yard rushing touchdown by Tony Jones early in the fourth quarter.Mistakes, missed assignments and a hangover in the first half all contributed to an unimpressive victory. No anger management needed here.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Daily News (Los Angeles) Visit the Daily News (Los Angeles) at .dailynews.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存
