Dolgener's 25-yard TD run put Andrews ahead early in the fourth quarter and his 16-yard scoring strike to Coy Lopez, along with Braden Grimsley's extra-point kick, provided the necessary cushion. ... Mason was pleased with the season-opening performance and feels like the Mustangs are ahead of schedule. "We were able to drive the football and move it down the field so that was a big plus," Mason said. "I think we had three or four straight drives that we scored on. From a conditioning standpoint we were in pretty good shape and our execution is getting there." ... Henson said he was pleased with the depth of contribution in the running game and also said, aside from a few dropped balls, the passing offense was solid enough to keep the Alpine defense from stacking the box. Kermit's first game under first-year head coach Arick Heredia featured the Yellow Jackets' new spread offense, which gained 221 yards but was held out of the end zone. Heredia said Jared Easley will be back at quarterback, and where the Yellow Jackets can make up ground is by cutting back on the penalties. "We've just got to execute better on offense for sure," Heredia said. "I know they were disappointed with the loss, but they saw the overall picture that we were in the game most of the time and we had our opportunities." ... Kermit's defense surrendered 361 yards last week, and Heredia said the Yellow Jackets must be wary of the big play and not allow the bevy of Pecos running backs to break off large chuncks of yardage. Crane's defense yielded the least amount of yards (140) around the Permian Basin, and Esparza pointed to a pair of stands inside the red zone that he felt were encouraging signs. The Wolves weren't as fortunate in their opener, though quarterback Dillon Gainey, son of first-year head coach Dan Gainey, completed 28 of 45 passes for 488 yards three touchdowns and an interception. Dan Gainey said the Wolves start four new offensive linemen this season and that has led to some "growing pains" in terms of establishing the run. ... Dillon Gainey, a junior who missed all of last season with a broken arm, connected with eight different receivers. His favorite target was Jonathan Jackson, who hauled in 10 catches for 199 yards. But McCamey failed to cash in on four Stamford turnovers. "A lot of it was the things where we shot ourselves in the foot. We were not quite as clean as we needed to be," Fellows said. "Our kids played hard and played well. We are still learning and that had a lot to do with it." ...The Roughnecks blanked Olton, forcing three turnovers -- including an interception by Paul Vidales that thwarted an Olton drive inside the red zone. Fort Davis suffered more than just a 22-18 loss to Sierra Blanca in Schroeder's debut, as standouts Lalito Hernandez and Hunter Hurley left the game with injuries and did not return. Hurley had a hand in all three Fort Davis scores before leaving the game. "We're just going to go day-to-day on these injuries," Schroeder said. "But we're not going to take a chance. They have to be 100 percent ready to go before we put them in. We're going to get our younger kids some quality reps against some really good people. It should be a good maturing process for us." ... Hauk does not know what the Bulldogs will see from Fort Davis with former college coach Schroeder at the helm. "It's going to be real difficult," Hauk said. Last season the Shorthorns picked up thier first six-man victory by beating the Eagles in Marfa, and Jones feels his team will be anxious to bounce back from Saturday's setback. "Our confidence is a little better going in," Jones said. "We look forward to playing Sanderson. It's a good little rivalry and it's one of those games that we're going to be geared up for."... Jones said much like last season, coming off a 46-0 loss to Grandfalls-Royalty, he'll shorten up the playbook and focus on six or seven base offensive plays. Tim Flores rushed for 44 yards for Marfa against Klondike. "We may have a few more wrinkles that we're going to throw at them," Jones said. "You have to do something different after getting 45ed." ... Sanderson coach Jerry Garza said Marfa likely will pose a stiffer challenge than his team's opening game. "They look very big," Garza said. "They've got some size and really strong kids. I think they'll try to use their size on us and try to overpower us simply because we can't match up with them on the front line. If we have an advantage anywhere, I think it will be speed. First-year Trinity coach Antwan Alexander is still searching for his first. ... Things won't get any easier for Alexander's squad this week as it squares off against the Red Devils. "Rankin is a big physical team on offense and defense," said Alexander, who was a standout player for Midland Lee and Texas Tech. "We have a lot of things to work on and we're going to have our hands full Friday night."... Rankin rushed for more than 400 yards last week and Alexander knows that will be a point of emphasis. Aaron Castillo led the Red Devils with 234 of those yards and three touchdowns wile Junior Rodriguez rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns along with an interception return for a TD. ... Ray said the keys for Rankin will be cleaning up some of the early-season execution errors that kept the Red Devils from blowing the game open sooner. Defensively the focus will be on Trinity's passing game, after the Chargers put the ball in the air on 69 percent of their offensive plays. "We're really just focusing on our own execution on both sides of the ball," Ray said. "We're really stressing the pass defense this week, they run a lot of spread so I'm sure the ball will be thrown all over the place." ... Alexander is hoping the Chargers can make the necessary adjustments to stay competitive against Rankin, one of three public school playoff teams Trinity will face in the first four weeks of the season. "We schedule like that not to take our beatings, but to see what the good public schools are doing. The veteran coach reminded his squad of that as it reviewed Saturday's game film. "We looked at the positive things," Jones said of the film. "We moved the ball really well at times, and shot ourselves in the foot some. We saw a lot of things that we can correct and a lot of things that we can change to make us better."... Joshua Matta had seven catches for 138 yards and three touchdowns against Rankin. Isaiah Mendoza rushed for 192 yards and one TD. ... Immanuel Christian is coming off a decisive win over Dell City, which is a district rival of Balmorhea's. "We don't really know much about them," Jones said. "We really don't know the kids and we don't know much about what they're doing. We didn't get to look at them on film, but they handled Dell City pretty easy and that kind of surprised us. We're not going in overly confident by any means."... Immanuel head coach Wendel Powers says the biggest challenge for his team in this meeting with Balmorhea will be the size disadvantage. "We played Balmorhea the past four or five years, and just from experience, we know they're really big and really well-coached," Powers said. "Playing Grandfalls is a tough challenge," Fort Hancock head coach Frank Saldana said. "Last year they came down here and gave us a beating. They're coming off a loss, so I'm sure they'll be pretty hungry. We're just trying to pump up our kids to expect a tough, hard game." ... The Cowboys dropped a 32-20 decision to Division I No. 4-ranked Water Valley in the marquee matchup at the West Texas Six-man Shootout in McCamey. It was only the second loss under head coach Joe Helms, who is 13-2 with the Cowboys but the second consecutive setback dating back to last season's semifinal appearance. "That pit in their stomach has kind of set in," Helms said of the loss. "These kids are very competitive and we've had a much better week of preparation and are starting to get into a routine. I expect we'll be ready to go Friday night." ... Gilbert Nunez passed for 213 yards against Water Valley, connecting with seven different receivers. ... As far as game-planning for Fort Hancock, Helms is not familiar with Saldana, who replaced longtime Mustangs' coach Danny Medina, but made the drive to scout Fort Hancock's win over El Paso Faith Christian. ...
