Source: Milwaukee Journal SentinelOct.迷你倉 25--In a world that is rapidly digitizing, Dane County ranked 9th on a list compiled by the Progressive Policy Institute of counties that have had strong job growth in information technology and related sectors during the last five years.One of only two Midwestern counties to break the top 25, Dane County reflected what urban studies theorist Richard Florida said was a rise of college towns as high-tech hotspots."High-tech firms and high-paying, high-tech jobs are key factors in economic growth and prosperity," Florida observed. "Some economists have estimated that every high-tech job creates an additional five or so spinoff jobs, a significant ripple effect through the economy."Madison, the largest city in Dane County and home to the University of Wisconsin, ranked 20th on a list Florida compiled earlier this year of top metro areas for venture capital activity per capita. The university's computer science department is consistently among the top 10 in the country.The index measures the number of new tech/information jobs created between 2007 and 2012 as a share of 2007 total private sector employment. An index of 1 means new tech/information jobs eq文件倉al 1% of total private employment.The top 25 counties showed an average private sector job gain of 2.4% during the five years ended in 2012. All other counties had an average decline of 3.5%."A vibrant tech/info sector seemed to make the difference between a local economy that had recovered by 2012 and one that was still in decline," said Michael Mandel, the study's author and chief economic strategist for The Progressive Policy Institute, a Washington, D.C., think tank.Dane County had a tech/info jobs index of 1.3, and showed a 24.9% increase in such jobs during the five years ended in 2012.
