British watchmakers have long had a strong following among collectors, but their names did not always resonate with the public.迷你倉 All that is changing. The Brits are coming.Bremont Watch Company has signalled its intention to become a force in the Asian market by opening a flagship store in Central, knowing that Hong Kong is a focal point for watch retailing in the region.The young company, hailing from Henley-on-Thames (so British), is the brainchild of Giles and Nick English (again, so British).They have a family history of involvement with aircraft, in flying them and in their engineering, and spent five years developing their signature aviation-inspired chronometers before launching the first models in 2007.As the brothers were only interested in creating mechanical watches to high specifications for the price point, they set up an atelier in Switzerland to access the best the world had to offer in horology. The Bremont design team is based in Britain, where the watches are assembled. “We are not artisan-tiny, or part of a luxury conglomerate. Bremont is not a vanity project,” stresses Nick English, who explains that the Bremont name takes after a benevolent French farmer, Antoine Bremont, who helped the brothers hide their aircraft from the authorities – after they force-landed in his fields during one of their aviation adventures.The brothers are excited to be part of a resurgence in British watchmaking and in “creating a distinctively British character to the timepieces by connecting to other great British firms and institutions such as Aston Martin and Jaguar”, says Nick English, who adds that “a large part of our ethos is focused on producing watches that we felt can only be described as being over-engineered”.Bremont’s latest novelty, the limited-edition Codebreaker, which he describes as a “watch unlike any other watch ever created” is closely associated with the Bletchley Park Trust, the famous wartime code-breaking establishment.Codebreaker, inspired by a 1940s officer’s watch, has a Flyback Chr儲存nograph GMT movement and incorporates pieces of actual Bletchley Park artefacts; for example, part of the rotor of the watch will be made from the wheel of an Enigma machine. There are 240 Codebreakers in steel and 50 in rose gold.Arnold & Son Switzerland has a British heritage, though no actual relationship to the pioneering watchmaker John Arnold of the 18th century.The company’s exclusive mechanical Calibre A&S1615 was inspired by the regulators created by John and Roger Arnold and by antique British skeleton clocks.Unusual dial designs and off-centre indicators are signatures of Arnold & Son, which glories in complexities.The skeletonised movement of Arnold & Son’s Time Pyramid watch, from the Instrument Collection, is pyramid-shaped and appears to float between two sapphire crystals. It is housed in rose gold and completely see-through, making it visually interesting even to non-aficionados.Another rather surprising feature is that Time Pyramid is not a limited edition.For watch historians, the Arnold name is iconic, and so is the name Graham.In the late 17th century, George Graham, like John Arnold a century later, was a master watchmaker. Today, he inspires Graham Watches, a British firm known for bold designs and creative thinking on technical issues.The company makes no bones about being different, even describing itself as “quirky” and proud that it has a big vision for big watches. Certainly, it appeals to those with a spirit of adventure. Take the Chronofighter, for example. Now in its second generation, the Chronofighter has quite a following. Chronofighter Sahara looks ready for action with its black steel case, black ceramic bezel, big tan-coloured markers and fabric strap. The crown is extra large, with the pusher for the chronograph in the centre, and its features include a telemeter for measuring distance from your position.Modern British firms are drawing on an illustrious, if little known, history of watchmaking to create timepieces of quality that will have an impact on the Asian market.mini storage
