Available here as the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit - the highest level trim - it comes with nicer leather and finishes (like alcantara headlining), ventilated seats and air suspension, among other features.But the biggest attraction has to be the Grand Cherokee's dynamic updates. Out goes the old five-speed automatic transmission from its Mercedes-Benz days (Jeep had a technological partnership with the German carmaker and its platform is actually based on the M-Class). In comes a new eight-speed ZF auto with an electronic gear lever and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.So even though it is mated to the same 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine, the Grand Cherokee benefits from improved consumption and emission figures.Also new is the electro-hydraulic steering system. It is slightly slower (you need to turn the steering wheel a bit more to achieve the same effect), but it is also lighter, allowing for a more relaxed driving style with a good turning circle.When travelling at high speed, however, it can feel slightly vague; together with the softly-sprung suspension, this accentuates the Grand Cherokee's floaty ride.But when going over rough terrain, the new steering promises to be more forgiving. The Jeep is, after all, a genuine four-wheel-drive. Its accomplished 4X4 system has a two-speed transfer case with low range capability and the Selec-Terrain traction management system has five settings - Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud and Rock.With adjustable ride height, the Grand Cherokee's air suspension can be raised by as much as 66 mm above normal ride height by pressing a button on t儲存e lower centre console to traverse off-road obstacles. In the urban context, it will be automatically lowered by 15 mm to improve aerodynamics and fuel consumption. And when parked, it drops to 40 mm for easier ingress/egress or cargo loading.While these capabilities are not new to the Grand Cherokee, what is are the user interface and overall level of refinement. American cars in general, and the Jeep brand in particular, have been singled out for the quality of their interiors, but the latest Grand Cherokee is a big surprise because its cabin ambience is pleasant and the materials used are more than acceptable.Along with a new steering wheel and centre console, there are other nice touches, such as the illuminated cupholders and door pockets, for example.The user interface is brand new. The seven-inch virtual display in the instrument binnacle has mind-boggling menus of vehicle data and multiple levels of customisation. Safety equipment include the adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with crash mitigation and a blind-spot monitoring system offering audio and visual warnings. For the last item, a little icon in the corner of the door mirror flashes when there is a vehicle in your blind spot; flicking the indicator stalk triggers a chime.The tall Jeep is also practical, with a roomy and relatively upscale interior, and a load area that is high and squarish.Like most American models, it is actually a very nice drive when you are cruising and don't have too many fast curves or corners to take. And unlike most American models, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit can also be ordered with a 3.0-litre turbodiesel for the same price.
